CHAPTER NINE

When I got home that night I made sure the deadbolt was locked, then sat down with a diet Coke to go over my notes. I decided that I needed to talk to Kathy’s mother to see if she knew how Kathy found out that Sandy wasn’t wearing underpants when her body was recovered from the water. I also needed to know more about Kathy’s mother’s accident.

I wanted to find out where Andrea was living too. At this point, she was the most promising suspect. Sandy had never accepted her as an equal member of the Cat Pack and had humiliated her by displaying a nude photo of her in school. She had fought with Sandy before the drowning and had spiked Sandy’s Thermos with both vodka and sleeping pills, a guarantee that she would be unconscious and easy prey. The attack on Eva was problematic, but then Eva had said the attacker had used an object to hit her. That meant the assailant could be male or female. As to Eva’s father’s murder, he would have known Andrea and certainly would have let her into the house. And now nobody seemed to know where Andrea was.

I felt a sense of urgency about finding out who killed Kathy. It wasn’t just my Wonder Woman need for justice anymore. I was afraid that if I didn’t get to the bottom of the murder soon, then I might be the next victim.

I glanced at the calendar before I got ready for bed and blanched when I saw that this year’s Reine d’Or dance was the next Saturday night. I’d planned on losing ten pounds and getting a really nice dress for the dance. I wondered how much weight I could lose in a week. I circled the date with a purple Magic Marker I kept by the calendar to highlight important dates, like the start of a new diet.

Eileen, of course, probably had made a trip to St. Louis to pick up a spiffy number to wear. I wondered idly if she was bringing Drummond or if she had latched onto someone else by now. I moved to the window and looked toward her house. There were a couple of lights on, and I briefly considered calling to ask if I could borrow her copy of the Fat Blaster’s diet. But then she’d be all over me the rest of the week, trying to be encouraging. And Eileen’s encouragement was the kind that drove one to binge eating.

I was turning away from the window when I thought I saw a movement beyond the trees. It was just a blip in the corner of my eye, something passing in front of Eileen’s lighted window. I stared hard, trying to discern any shapes. But there was nothing. After a couple of minutes, I gave up and went to bed. I realized how unnerved I was after learning how the Cat Pack’s tormentor played with his, or her, victims.

I would eventually get to the bottom of the whole thing, I told myself.
